Taught to Conform

The industrial revolution set the standard for how people were expected to conform.  As industry grew, so did the need to have people who could work in the factories, on the railways and support businesses to their best ability.

The better the qualifications, the higher level of job they would have.  Lower grades meant being a ground worker, higher grades moved people through to supervisor and management levels.

During my school years, there were exams taken when you were 10/11 years old that determined if you went to grammar school or secondary school.

Grammar school kids went on to University.  Secondary school kids were expected to work in factories, shops and menial jobs.

I remember kids failing the exam and parents going frantic trying to get their children into grammar school or on the waiting list for a grammar school so when a kid dropped out of grammar school their was a list of kids ready to step up.

The whole system was designed to create good employees – in return, employers were expected to provide their employees with jobs for life.

Everything Changes

Change is a part of our lives.  From birth to death our bodies change every day. Business is no different.  The Industrial Revolution is in the past.  The Information Age and Age of the Entrepreneur are upon us.

Sadly, the education system remains largely unchanged.  Yes, it has adapted to more modern times such as using computers but the essence of the schooling system remains the same.  Get the best grades possible so the student is more acceptable to employers.

When my daughter was at school, I remember the end-of-school-year function for the kids and their parents.

I sat through an hour-long speech by the headmaster, talking about choosing as broad a range of subjects as possible, don’t specialize so the kids would have more opportunities for jobs.  Do after-school activities to show commitment to giving extra to the employer.

There was not one word about being an entrepreneur even though the majority of the parents at the school were entrepreneurs with their own businesses.

The world was changing, but the school was not.

Choose to be Different

Entrepreneurs choose to be different.

Dare to Be Different

When you look at the wealthiest people in the world.  Today’s billionaires.  They choose to be different.

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, didn’t invent books or selling of books.  He chose a different way to sell books.

Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, didn’t invent cars or space travel.  He chose to be different by using battery power instead of fossil fuels for his cars and instead of using rockets that were destroyed after take-off he chose to bring the rockets back home.

At Karen Newton International, instead of telling prospective clients, they need $10k – $20k to start learning and investing.  We chose to teach our clients how to make money starting with zero and create the pathway they can take to become millionaires.  Our education system is supported by joint venture opportunities that have a low start-up cost usually less than $500.

Look at your business or investment strategies and choose to be different.

Be A Trailblazer

In 1980 and the 1990s, I made history numerous times.  I didn’t choose to be a trailblazer, I was simply doing something that I wanted to do.

My husband and I started a business in the fire protection industry in New Zealand.  At that time, no woman had ever owned a fire protection company.  I remember attending meetings and being shunned because women did not work in fire protection.

Eventually, I became the 1st woman chair of the Fire Protection Contractors Association again causing a stir.

As a trailblazer, I have learned –

1. Not to conform to the expected

2. Find my niche/industry.  Study it, learn it, practice what I preach and keep evolving

3. Have a thick skin and accept that people will not like what you do or how you are doing it but keep doing it anyway.

Break the Mold

Anybody can do, be or have anything they choose.  They can decide on their level of wealth and live their dream lifestyle. All they need to do is step away from conformity and choose to be different.
