Be A Survivor and Thrive
Every morning I wake up and look at the sea. Is it going to be a warm sunny day, where the sea is so calm there are no waves or is it going to be a windy stormy day with the deafening sound of the waves crashing onto the beach?
Recently, there was a big storm, as I walked down to the jetty, I noticed a little row boat anchored off shore. It was bobbing up and down often lost below the swell of huge waves. A couple of days later, I went back to the jetty to see if the boat was still afloat. I searched and searched the waves and finally saw it. Filled with water with just the bow peaking through the waves. This boat survived one of the biggest storms in history for this little fishing village.
The world of investing is very much the same as the sea. Every morning as I catch up with what has happened in the international markets while I was sleeping, I can see that the markets are moving along calmly or there is turmoil and turbulence resulting in volatile markets.
Throughout history, there are booms and busts. As a contrarian investor (meaning I buy low when everyone else is selling and sell high when everyone else is buying) there are times when I have to sit back and patiently wait for the market to come to me. There are lean times and boom times but most of all you have to set yourself up so you can take advantage of the markets. You become a survivor of the calm markets waiting for the storms to hit so you can take advantage of the turbulence in the markets and thrive.
In order to survive, there has to be a plan. A plan to ensure you are making money in any economic times, a plan to ensure you have sufficient reserves to not only survive but thrive when the opportunities present themselves.
