Overnight, President Trump announced sweeping new tariffs on imported goods — a decision that immediately echoed one of the most defining economic mistakes of the 20th century: the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930.

Understanding the historical consequences of tariffs gives us a crucial lens through which to view today’s bold policy shift — and what it might mean for our economic future.

A History Lesson: The Smoot-Hawley Tariff and the Great Depression

Back in 1930, as the U.S. was beginning to feel the weight of economic downturn, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act was introduced to “protect” American farmers and manufacturers by raising tariffs on more than 20,000 imported goods. The intention was simple — make foreign products more expensive so Americans would buy domestic.

But the fallout was far more complex.

Countries retaliated. International trade collapsed. U.S. exports and imports with Europe fell by nearly two-thirds between 1929 and 1932. Rather than insulating the economy, the tariffs deepened the global depression, severely damaging the agricultural sector, triggering waves of bank failures, and ushering in a decade of economic hardship.

The Smoot-Hawley lesson was clear: protectionism can be a dangerous game in an interconnected world.

Fast Forward to 2025: A Tariff Resurgence

On April 2, 2025, President Trump announced a new round of sweeping tariffs in response to what he called a “national emergency” caused by America’s trade deficits. Starting April 5, a 10% baseline tariff will apply to all imports, regardless of origin.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Additional reciprocal tariffs are being introduced based on trade deficits with individual countries. While there were about 60 countries affected some of the headline ones are

China: 34%

European Union: 20%

Japan: 24%

Vietnam 46%

Taiwain 32%

UK 10%

This bold move is meant to give American companies a competitive edge, bring manufacturing home, and curb trade imbalances. Some exemptions apply — including to autos, steel (they were hit with 25% tariffs earlier in the year) pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors — but the overall economic impact could be dramatic.

Economic Ripple Effects

Here’s what economists are warning:

Inflation Pressure: With tariffs pushing up the cost of imports, prices are likely to rise across the board. Estimates suggest it could cost the average U.S. household an extra $1,350 per year.

Market Jitters: Stock markets reacted swiftly with volatility and declines, reflecting fears of slowed economic growth and higher costs for businesses.

Trade Wars Looming: The EU, Canada, and other trade partners have already hinted at retaliatory tariffs. A global trade war — much like the one triggered by Smoot-Hawley — could follow.

Retaliation or Talks – The Economic Affect on Jobs and Trade

President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of new tariffs has prompted significant concern regarding their potential economic impact on the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU), particularly in terms of costs and employment.

United Kingdom

The UK faces a 10% tariff on its exports to the United States, a rate lower than the 20% imposed on EU countries. Despite this, UK officials have expressed disappointment, acknowledging that these tariffs could adversely affect key industries

Automotive Sector: The UK car industry is notably impacted, with a 25% tariff on vehicles exported to the U.S. This could lead to decreased demand, potentially resulting in reduced profits and job losses within the sector.

Steel and Aluminum Industries: These sectors are also subject to a 25% tariff, which may harm exports and threaten employment in related industries.

The UK government is pursuing diplomatic avenues to mitigate these effects, aiming to negotiate a broader trade agreement with the U.S. Officials have indicated a preference for negotiation over immediate retaliatory measures to avoid escalating trade tensions.

European Union

The EU has been subjected to a 20% tariff on its exports to the U.S., prompting significant concern among member states:

Economic Impact: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that these tariffs could have severe consequences for the global economy, potentially leading to increased costs for consumers and businesses that have benefited from transatlantic trade.

Retaliatory Measures: The EU is preparing countermeasures, including potential tariffs on up to €26 billion ($28.4 billion) of U.S. goods, in response to the U.S. tariffs.

Projections on Costs and Employment

While specific projections are still emerging, economists and industry leaders have expressed concerns about the broader implications:

Inflationary Pressures: The tariffs are expected to increase the cost of imported goods, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers in both the U.S. and affected countries.

Employment Risks: Industries facing higher tariffs may experience reduced export demand, which could lead to job losses, particularly in sectors like automotive and manufacturing that are heavily reliant on international trade.

The newly imposed tariffs by the U.S. are anticipated to have significant economic repercussions for both the UK and the EU, with potential increases in costs for consumers and risks to employment in key industries.

Both regions are actively seeking strategies to address and mitigate these impacts through diplomatic and economic measures.

The Bigger Picture: Then vs. Now

So what makes today’s situation different — and what remains the same?

What’s Different:

The global economy is far more interconnected than in the 1930s.

Technology and logistics have created highly complex global supply chains.

Modern economies are service-oriented, reducing direct exposure in some sectors.

What’s the Same:

Retaliation remains a risk.

Tariffs still act as a hidden tax on consumers and businesses.

Trade wars can escalate rapidly, hurting growth and stability.

Strategic Takeaway: What Entrepreneurs & Investors Should Do

If history has taught us anything, it’s that economic protectionism, no matter how well-intentioned, can have unintended consequences. As smart entrepreneurs and investors, we need to:

Monitor Global Reactions Closely – The response from Europe and China will set the tone for global trade in the months to come.

Diversify Markets and Supply Chains – Businesses that rely on imports or exports should consider diversifying sources and markets now.

Look for Inflation-Proof Investments – Dividend stocks, precious metals, and strategic assets may perform better in inflationary times.

Stay Nimble – The economic landscape may shift rapidly. Flexibility and fast decision-making are vital.

Online Business – opportunities to grow online digital businesses

Lessons From History And What It Means For The Future

Tariffs may be making a comeback, but the risks are as real now as they were nearly a century ago. The Smoot-Hawley Tariff taught us how quickly good intentions can spiral into economic disaster. As the world watches Trump’s bold new strategy unfold, we would do well to remember the lessons of the past.

Because sometimes, the best way to prepare for the future… is to look back.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered her long-anticipated Spring Statement on March 26, 2025, setting the tone for the UK’s fiscal and economic policy amid tightening conditions.

Public Spending & Welfare Cuts

One of the most controversial elements of the budget was a sweeping reduction in welfare expenditure. The aim? To bring down the national debt and maintain fiscal headroom. However, the human impact is stark. According to reports, over 3 million households will feel the squeeze, with an additional 250,000 people – including 50,000 children – pushed into relative poverty by 2029-30.

While these moves may please credit rating agencies and show fiscal responsibility, they risk short-term social unrest and could impact consumer spending – a key driver of GDP growth.

In response to rising global tensions, Reeves confirmed a rise in defense spending to 2.5% of GDP, reversing decades of flat or declining defense budgets. This strategic move comes at a cost, as overseas aid is reduced to 0.3% of Gross National Income, saving £2.6 billion annually.

This may shore up defense contractors and domestic security sectors but will also draw criticism from humanitarian organizations and developing nations who depend on UK aid.

Economic Forecast: Growth Cut in Half

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) significantly downgraded the UK’s growth forecast for 2025 from 2.0% to 1.0%, citing economic headwinds, geopolitical risk, and fragile consumer sentiment.

For investors, this slowdown reinforces the importance of focusing on value sectors, defensive plays, and potentially international diversification.

Across the Atlantic, President Trump has reignited global trade tensions with a bold new round of tariffs. The two major fronts: the automotive and metal industries.

25% Tariff on Imported Cars and Parts

Starting April 3, a 25% tariff will apply to all imported passenger vehicles, light trucks, and essential parts like engines and transmissions.

The aim? To rebuild America’s domestic auto manufacturing base. The risk? Higher vehicle prices, supply chain disruption, and retaliatory tariffs from global trade partners, particularly the EU and Japan.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has already condemned the move, calling it “nonsense” and urging Brussels to take immediate action.

This trade war escalation could result in inflationary pressure at a time when the Fed is trying to stabilize rates – a potentially toxic combination.

Steel and Aluminum Tariffs Reinstated

In mid-March, Trump also reinstated 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, citing abuse of previous exemptions. While this will benefit U.S. producers in the short term, global supply chains – already fragile – are once again under threat.

Investors in industries reliant on metals (e.g., construction, autos, aerospace) should brace for potential margin pressure. Meanwhile, those positioned in U.S.-based steel producers or ETFs like SLX (VanEck Steel ETF) may see short-term gains.

Wall Street didn’t take the tariff news lightly. The S&P 500 fell 2% this week as concerns mounted over renewed trade wars and the inflationary impact on consumer prices. European indices also slid, reflecting global interconnectedness.

Central bank buying

Diminishing trust in fiat currencies

The current gold-to-silver ratio sits at 91:1, far above the historical average of ~60:1.

What’s more, 2025 is on track for a 149 million ounce silver deficit, caused by:

Rising industrial demand (especially in EVs and solar panels)

Mining slowdowns

Poor recycling rates

Strong investor interest

While not traditionally considered a safe haven, Bitcoin is increasingly being correlated with gold during times of global tension. That’s a paradigm shift worth watching, as it suggests crypto is maturing as a store of value, especially with upcoming Bitcoin halving events expected to reduce supply and boost prices.

Here’s a breakdown of the top 10 events and their potential impact on investment strategies.

Politics

1. Ukraine Summit in London Strengthens UK’s Global Stance

Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted the 2025 London Summit on Ukraine, bringing together leaders from 18 nations to discuss military aid and diplomatic strategies. The UK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression, positioning itself as a leading voice in European security.

Investment Insight: Increased UK defense spending and potential supply chain disruptions may impact defense stocks and energy markets.

2. UK-Ireland Relations Enter a New Era

Starmer met with Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin in Liverpool, marking a significant step towards closer UK-Ireland ties. The discussion focused on post-Brexit trade, border policies, and economic cooperation, signaling a fresh start in relations between the two nations.

Investment Insight: Strengthening trade relations may create new opportunities in sectors like logistics, agriculture, and financial services.

3. Reform UK Party Faces Leadership Crisis

The right-wing Reform UK Party faced internal chaos after MP Rupert Lowe was suspended for publicly criticizing Nigel Farage’s leadership. The fallout has sparked concerns over a potential split within the party, which has been gaining traction among disillusioned Conservative voters.

Investment Insight: Political instability can lead to market uncertainty, impacting investor confidence in UK equities.

4. Scottish Independence Back on the Table

The debate over Scottish independence has reignited, with SNP leader and First Minister Kate Forbes urging Westminster to allow another referendum. With support for independence fluctuating, this remains a contentious issue in UK politics.

Investment Insight: The potential for an independence referendum could create volatility in Scottish-based businesses, particularly in finance, energy, and property markets.

5. Conservative Leadership Speculation Grows

Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been spotted reconnecting with influential Conservative donors, fueling speculation about his potential return to politics. With growing dissatisfaction over Labour’s economic policies, some Tories see Sunak as a strong contender to lead the party once again.

Investment Insight: If political sentiment shifts back toward conservative economic policies, investors may anticipate changes in tax policies, regulations, and interest rates.

Economy

6. Bank of England Warns Inflation Will Persist Until 2027

The Bank of England has warned that inflation will remain above 2% until at least 2027, making it unlikely that interest rates will be cut in the near future. This means homeowners and businesses will continue to face high borrowing costs, with no immediate relief in sight.

Investment Insight: High inflation and interest rates may continue to put pressure on real estate markets and consumer spending, while benefiting inflation-hedged assets like commodities and certain equities.

7. FTSE 100 Sees Biggest Drop in Months

The FTSE 100 index fell by 2%, marking its worst week since December 2024. Market analysts cite uncertainty over Donald Trump’s proposed trade tariffs as a key reason, which could disrupt UK exports and impact economic growth.

Investment Insight: Investors should monitor sectors most exposed to tariffs, such as manufacturing, automotive, and consumer goods, while considering safe-haven investments.

8. High Street Retailers Struggle as Store Closures Continue

Several major UK retailers, including Ann Summers, WHSmith, and New Look, have announced store closures due to declining foot traffic and rising costs. The retail sector continues to battle post-pandemic consumer habits and inflation-driven spending cuts.

Investment Insight: The ongoing retail downturn highlights the growing dominance of e-commerce and digital-first business models as potential investment opportunities.

9. UK-Japan Trade Talks Aim to Counter US Tariffs

As concerns over US trade policies grow, UK and Japanese ministers met in Tokyo to discuss strengthening trade relations. The UK is pushing for a rules-based international trade system to mitigate the negative impact of Trump’s proposed tariffs on key exports.

Investment Insight: Strengthened trade partnerships with Japan could benefit sectors like technology, pharmaceuticals, and financial services.

10. Cost of Living Crisis Continues to Bite

Despite slight improvements in wage growth, many UK households are still struggling with the high cost of energy and food.
